Gillian Marks


Gillian joined in January 2022 as Beckon’s Company Secretary and Legal Counsel. Her expertise in corporate, commercial, taxation and employment law will greatly benefit our stakeholders, investees, investors, partners and clients. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (Adelaide University) and Master of Taxation (University of NSW).

As a senior legal counsel with executive leadership expertise across government, corporates and NFPs, Gillian’s extensive experience includes leading multi-jurisdictional and multi-disciplinary projects across the public and private sector. As General Counsel, she has developed and implemented major public sector projects. She was responsible for multi-disciplinary teams made up of economists, lawyers, accountants and ICT experts. Her responsibilities included procurement and legal as well as industry development implementation ensuring SME participation in large scale government projects. She has been legal adviser to Cabinet committees, Ministers, Premiers and Chief Executives.

Whilst undertaking her Master of Taxation, Gillian worked in the ATO Tax Counsel Network in the areas of research and development incentives, start-up and venture capital including investor incentives for early-stage innovation companies.

Gillian’s private sector experience as a law partner and special counsel is across industries such as banking and finance, infrastructure and ICT. It includes corporate commercial and competition law, industrial and employment law, intellectual property, dispute resolution, taxation, compliance, and risk management.

Her projects have been recognised by the World Bank (SA Water designated Project of Interest), by Outsourcing Centre USA (Most flexible and innovative outsourcing contract – ATO) and she received a Telstra Business woman of the Year Finalist Award. She has been invited as keynote speaker to various forums, including Georgetown University Global Competition and Sourcing, Defence Industry Conference “Alliances and Procurement” and National Seminar International Trafficking in Arms Regulations.

In 2018 Gillian commenced her own incorporated legal practice, My Counsel, providing legal services to small business and NFPs and is legal adviser to an indigenous corporation representing the Adnyamathanha people in South Australia.

In addition to her professional career, Gillian has contributed to local and disadvantaged communities. She has been Chairperson and Spokesperson for Non-profit Community Child Care Centres and advocated for childcare workers and parents. She has walked the Kokoda Track twice and was inaugural director of The Kokoda Track Foundation, an NFP working with communities in New Guinea. In 2015 Gillian lived in an indigenous community in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands providing mentoring and support programs.

Gillian’s true skill is to work with people from all backgrounds and experience with respect, equality and good humour. She is adept in operating in the interface between macro policy and strategy with practical implementation and delivery. She genuinely loves working with multi-disciplinary teams and in high energy environments.
